Officially the Republic of Armenia, is a country in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. Armenia is in Western Asia on the Armenian Highlands, it is bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east and Iran to the south. The modern Republic of Armenia became independent in 1991 during the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Armenia recognizes the Armenian Apostolic Church, the world's oldest national church, as the country's primary religious establishment. Yerevan is the capital city of Republic of Armenia. It is also the largest city of the country. Armenian is the official language of the country. Russian and English also spoken in the country. Total population of country is 2,924,816. 98.1% of the total population is Armenians, 1.2% of the total population is Yazidis, 0.4% are Russians and 0.3% are others. The climate in Armenia is markedly highland continental. Summers are dry and sunny, lasting from June to mid-September. The temperature fluctuates between 22 to 36 C. Springs are short, while autumns are long. Autumns are known for their vibrant and colorful foliage. Winters are quite cold with plenty of snow, with temperatures ranging between -10 and - 5 C. Armenians have their own distinctive alphabet and language. The alphabet was invented in AD 405 and consists of 39 letters. 96% of the people in the country speak Armenian, while 75.8% of the population additionally speaks Russian, Although English is becoming increasingly popular.
